With reference to the letter (T 12067/12067/378)
of the 14th instant from this department relative to the
alleged renunciation of British nationality by Mr. Ho Shal
Lai (Robert Ho lung), I am directed by Secretary Sir
Austen Chamberlain to transmit to you herewith a copy of a letter from the Colonial Office and to request to be informed whether, in the event of its being ascertained by enquiry of the Chinese Legation that a declaration to this effect was in fact made by Mr. Ho Shai Lai at the Legation, such declaration would be regarded by Secretary Sir William Joynson-Hicks as having the effect of a declara- tion of alienage for the purposes of Section 14 (1) of the British Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914.
